Week 8 Blog Discussion

Areas of Health:  For Future Better U Challenges

We are nearing the end of our challenge, and want to know how the challenge has suited you so far.  In this post, please let us know what areas of health you would have liked to address.  (Please save all praise and appreciation for the next post! -hee hee.)

So far, we have addressed the following areas of health:
-Caloric intake
-Physical exercise
-Strength training
-Devotional time for Spiritual growth
-Meditation
-Service to others
-Awareness of Family
-Home Improvement
-Family History
-Healthy Finances
-Setting goals ahead of time
-Preparing for the Future
-Building our Brain power (oops. spoiler alert. that's next week's challenge!)

PLUS all the personal goals you chose to do on your own!  We have accomplished a lot over the last 2 months.

So, what could have made it better?  Sound off.  We promise, NO points will be removed for honesty.  Only for snarkiness.

  1. Okay so I waiting a whole day to see what other people wrote but maybe you're all doing that so I'll start...

I had a list of goals to work on that were in addition to all of these...but I can't seem to locate it at the moment so I'm sure I'm going to miss the one I really meant to write but the two that come to mind off the top of my head are meal planning and getting ready for a day the night before. I also like the idea of getting "dressed to shoes" as Flylady puts it. Getting up and getting completely dressed (hair/makeup) first thing so you feel ready for your day!

That being said...i don't think it could have been better...just different. It's been pretty awesome (tiring, eye opening, etc) but awesome, none the less.

  2. I really like the balance of tasks among the 3 categories Spiritual, Family and Physical. I have found it sometimes challenging to get the things done in each category completed BEFORE I want to do something I want to do.

The only thing I'd like to maybe change is to increase the joining fee so that we can have more than 1 winner for every weekly reward challenge.

  3. I agree with Erin. The balance of categories is great. I wouldn't change any of those. I think increasing the entry fee would be a good idea but not so we could have more prices, but because I think the greater the investment the more seriously we commit ourselves to the challenge. I also think it would have been a good idea to warn all of us how good the "veterans" of the challenge are so the rest of us knew what we were up against!

  4. I've been very impressed with the whole program. The variety of daily and new challenges has resulted in so many BetterMe opportunities. Personally I'd like to participate in the program every year starting April 1st. It's a good time to start since the weather is getting nicer and it finishes up before summer schedules make daily good habits harder to keep up with. I think next time I have an opportunity to participate (or help run) I'll challenge myself a little more.

  5. I think more interaction during the week with other participants would help me. I think maybe having a chat group, facebook page or thread of some sort on going where you could encourage each other, ask questions, etc. would help me out. I think a place to quickly post that everyone could see would be great.

    1. Jamie - I LOVE your idea! That should definitely be incorporated next time!

    2. I like this idea Jamie. Everyone has been very encouraging to me but there are days that are harder than others for varying reasons and it would be nice to have some additional communication.

  6. Said a different way: I need more motivation to do it (where "it" may very well be just about anything). Knowing that the guys were outnumbered, we knew any boys vs. girls challenge would be a sweep. Having seen Erin do these before, I knew she'd be going for 100% every day. It hasn't stopped me from getting most of my objectives done every day, but it is a bit demotivational knowing that the odds of me winning any prize is pretty low, unless there's a prize for being painfully honest. :)

    1. There have been several opportunities for everyone to win something. All of the individual weekly rewards are completely within your reach to qualify to win something. You don't have control over the partner, team, or boy vs. girl challenges, but all of the other ones are totally doable.

    2. Scott, I know the feeling. I've just realized there are many great examples to look up to in our family in every area. That includes you, too!

  7. Just reiterating what has already been said. More interaction with family members (though Durham isn't close to many of you) and increased motivation about halfway through the challenge. I sort of lost steam about week 5-6 and haven't quite been able to get it all back. Maybe I'm not challenging myself enough. Either way, I think we need to do this challenge again as sort of a personal "checkup" once a year on ourselves. I know I need it.

  8. I have loved reading everyone's comments on this Blog. I can see everyone's points and appreciate the suggestions.
I agree with Erin that increasing the cost would help a lot with the rewards that we would be able to give. This challenge cost everyone $25. We wanted to ensure that people would participate, and worried that keeping the cost higher would be the deciding factor in those who chose not to join. In previous challenges, we have paid about $35.
I think Joan is right in saying that paying more may help people feel more invested in pushing themselves.
I also wonder if we should have more partner and group-type rewards: Those weeks were phenomenal! We push ourselves so much harder when others are counting on us.

  9. Personally, I think that not only should points not be subtracted for snarkiness, but that high quality snarkiness should be rewarded as its own art form.
Okay, all that aside, there were times that I wished I could change my personal wildcards more often. It just seemed like some things ended up not being as much of a challenge as others, and more frequent opportunities to switch up personal wildcards could have allowed for moving on to other things sooner.

  10. This has been a great experience. I would love to do it again. I like the chat room idea. And I think partners and teams kept me on the ball a little more than the weeks I have been on my own.

  11. This is Brad. I also have enjoyed the challenge. I think some sort of chat room or twitter type thing would have been useful. Being able to get mini-text updates from other members straight to my phone would have been nice. I also have liked the partner/team weeks BUT I think too many of them would have not necessarily been better.

  12. My biggest challenge has been to keep focused on the various challenges of the game. I seem to do well in some and lousy in others, regardless of what I try. In the few weeks where I attained more than 8 or 9 points, I was more lucky that focused since things just seemed to work out better those weeks. The concept of chat room, facebook, etc may appeal to some but I am not into that very much as most of you know but I support it fully for those who are. Ed (still the UNKNOWN).
